A quick, honest note before you read on.
Everything here is general education and lived experience, shared to help you understand your own body better. It is not medical advice, diagnosis, or a treatment plan, and it is not a substitute for your doctor, dietitian, or healthcare team. EssentialAF is a daily nutritional support, not a medicine and never a meal replacement. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, managing a health condition, or taking medication (including anything for blood sugar, thyroid, or HRT), please check with your healthcare provider before making changes. You know your body. Use what serves you, leave what doesn't.
One serve, every morning How to take it
- 🥄 One serve a dayAdd two scoops to 350ml of cold water or milk. Powder first so you do not end up with it stuck in the lid. Shake well and enjoy.
- 🌅 Take it before your coffeeIdeally first thing in the morning, before caffeine. Taking EssentialAF before coffee supports your natural cortisol signalling and helps your circadian rhythm do what it is designed to do. Start your day fuelled, not disrupted.
- 💧 Drink more water, a lot moreThis is the one thing most people get wrong. Creatine and the fibre in EssentialAF both pull water in to do their job, so you will need to drink noticeably more than you do now. Aim for at least 2 to 3 litres a day, start every morning with a big glass before your shake, and keep a bottle with you so you are sipping all day. Skimp on water and you invite the bloating, not the benefits.
- ⏰ Can I take it at other times?Absolutely. Post training for recovery, or in the afternoon to stop cravings, are both great options. But if you can only pick one time, make it morning before coffee. Consistency and timing work together.
- 🍓 Smoothie? Absolutely.Blend away. EssentialAF works just as well blended into your morning smoothie as it does shaken. No rules here.
- 🥥 Skip the waterTry coconut water instead. Or chocolate coconut water if you want something that feels a little more like a treat than a supplement.
- ✨ Combos our customers are lovingOne scoop Berry mixed with one scoop Pina Colada. Half and half, shaken together. The community has spoken and we are not mad about it.
New here? Your body is adjusting What to expect
Some women feel amazing from day one. Others take a few days to adjust. Both are completely normal. Here is what is happening and why it is worth staying the course.
Before anything else: you need to drink more water, noticeably more.
EssentialAF brings creatine and a generous dose of fibre, and both pull water in to do their work. If your water does not go up with it, the creatine cannot load properly and the fibre can leave you bloated. Most women need to add a litre or two on top of what they drink now, aiming for around 2 to 3 litres a day. This one habit, more than any other, decides whether your first weeks feel amazing or uncomfortable. Keep a bottle on you and sip all day.
And here is the part most people miss. In midlife your body dehydrates far more easily than it used to, and being even slightly dry quietly fuels so many of the things we blame on menopause: fatigue, brain fog, headaches, poor sleep, achy joints, even hot flushes. The water you add for EssentialAF is the very same water that takes the edge off all of that. This is not a small detail, it is one of the most powerful levers you have right now.
In the first week or two you may see the number on the scales rise slightly, anywhere from half a kilo to a kilo or so. Do not panic. This is not fat and it is not weight gain. EssentialAF contains 3g of creatine monohydrate per serve, and creatine draws water into your muscle cells. That extra fluid sits inside the muscle, which is exactly where you want it. It is the creatine doing precisely what it is meant to do.
Creatine is one of the most researched supplements in the world and it earns its place here. It supports muscular strength and recovery, and more muscle means better glucose uptake and steadier blood sugar. Muscle is your body's largest site for glucose disposal, so the muscle creatine helps you hold onto is the same muscle that keeps your metabolism working properly. A little early fluid is a small price for an ingredient that genuinely delivers.
A couple of other things may nudge the scales too. The prebiotic fibres in the formula, 3g of inulin and 4.5g of acacia, feed your gut bacteria, and while your microbiome adjusts you may hold a little extra water or feel slightly bloated. That settles as your gut adapts. None of it is fat. Drink your water, give it two weeks, and watch the fluid balance out while the benefits keep building.
I could have left creatine out. I know plenty of women do not want to see the scales move, even slightly, and leaving it out would have been the easy marketing decision. But the benefits of creatine so far outweigh a bit of temporary fluid that I was not willing to build a weaker product just to keep the number looking pretty. I wanted to make something that actually works. So I will wear the pushback, as long as you understand what is really going on. It is not fat. It is not weight. It is just fluid, and it is absolutely worth it.
You may notice some bloating or changes in digestion. This is your gut microbiome recalibrating as it meets probiotics, prebiotic fibre and glutamine, often for the first time. Drink more water, stick with it. Most women find this settles completely by day 5 to 7.
This can be very different for everyone. If bloating is uncomfortable, start with a half scoop and build up as your body adjusts. There is no rush. And if you feel even slightly queasy in the early days, have your EssentialAF with a little food while your body adjusts. A few bites of breakfast, half a banana, or a handful of oats is enough to settle it. I personally have mine with just water first thing, but I have been doing this a long time. There is no prize for toughing it out, and remember this is support layered on top of real food, never a meal replacement.
Why water matters more now Hydration in midlife, the FAQs
Water is the most overlooked lever you have in midlife, and the one that quietly decides how good, or how rough, you feel day to day. Here is why it matters more than it ever did, and how to get it right.
Why does EssentialAF ask me to drink more water?
Two reasons sit right inside the formula. Creatine pulls water into your muscle cells to do its job, and the prebiotic fibres, inulin and acacia, need plenty of water to move smoothly through your gut. Give them enough and you get the energy, the fullness and the steady digestion they are there for. Skimp, and that same fibre can leave you bloated and sluggish. So the extra water is not optional, it is part of how the product works.
Why do I dehydrate more easily in midlife and menopause?
A few things shift at once. As estrogen falls it changes how your body holds and balances fluid, and it blunts your sense of thirst, so you genuinely do not feel thirsty until you are already running low. You also carry less muscle now, and muscle is the tissue that stores most of your body water, so there is less reserve to draw on. Add night sweats and hot flushes, which lose real fluid, plus the coffee and the occasional wine that pull water out, and it becomes very easy to run a little dry without ever noticing.
How does dehydration actually show up? (this surprises people)
Mild, ongoing dehydration rarely feels like thirst. It usually shows up as the very things we put down to menopause or just getting older: tiredness and afternoon energy slumps, brain fog and poor focus, headaches, dizziness or lightheadedness, heart flutters or palpitations, dry skin and dry eyes, achy stiff joints, muscle cramps, constipation, broken sleep, low mood and irritability, and stronger sugar cravings. So much of this gets blamed on hormones when it is partly, or mostly, a hydration problem. A quick daily check: your urine should be a pale straw colour. Darker than that and you are already behind.
Can drinking more really ease my menopause symptoms?
It genuinely can. Staying well hydrated will not switch menopause off, but it can take the edge off a surprising number of symptoms. Many women find that drinking more eases the intensity of their hot flushes, lifts their energy and concentration, settles headaches, helps their joints and digestion, and supports better sleep and a steadier mood. Because so many midlife complaints are made worse by being even slightly dry, water is one of the simplest and cheapest things that actually moves the needle.
So how much do I need, and how do I get there?
Aim for around 2 to 3 litres a day to start, and more on hot days or when you train. The trick is steady sipping, not one big effort. Begin with a big glass alongside your morning EssentialAF, keep a bottle within arm's reach and refill it, and let herbal teas and water rich foods count too. Go easy on stacking coffee and alcohol, which work against you. Then use the pale straw urine test as your simple daily check in.
This is general education to help you understand your body, not medical advice. If you feel persistently unwell or dizzy, or you have a health condition, please check in with your doctor.
Understanding your body Insulin resistance, and what helps
This is physiology, not failure. A few things stack up in midlife:
- Estrogen falls. Estrogen helps your cells stay sensitive to insulin and helps direct where fat is stored. As it declines through perimenopause and menopause, insulin sensitivity drops and fat shifts toward the belly.
- Muscle quietly disappears. From our 30s onward we lose muscle each decade unless we actively work to keep it. Muscle is your biggest glucose sink, the place that pulls sugar out of your blood. Less muscle means nowhere for glucose to go.
- Visceral fat and low grade inflammation rise, and both make cells less responsive to insulin.
- Sleep and stress get harder, and both nudge blood sugar in the wrong direction.
Small, repeatable daily habits move glucose out of your blood and into your muscles, which is exactly where you want it:
- Walk after meals. Even 10 to 15 minutes after eating helps your muscles soak up glucose without needing much insulin at all. One of the most powerful free tools you have.
- Keep your muscle. Resistance and bodyweight work (see the training section) builds the tissue that disposes of glucose all day long.
- Eat protein and fibre first, refined carbs last. Putting your veg, protein, and EssentialAF before the bread or rice blunts the spike.
- Break up long sitting. Stand and move for a minute or two every half hour. Frequent small movement beats one big effort and a still day.
- Protect your sleep. A single poor night measurably lowers insulin sensitivity the next day.
- Move in the morning light. Gentle morning movement plus daylight helps set your blood sugar and stress rhythms for the whole day.
Timing matters Cortisol, and firing it at the right time
In midlife, and in busy stressed lives, cortisol often fires at the wrong times: spiking late in the day, staying high at night, or surging from things we think are healthy. Chronically high cortisol raises blood glucose directly and, over time, deepens insulin resistance and drives belly fat. Common culprits that fire cortisol at the wrong moment:
- Intense or fasted high effort cardio when you are already depleted or under slept
- Caffeine too late in the day
- Under eating and long gaps with blood sugar swings
- Screens and bright light late at night
- Running on a near empty tank, emotionally and physically
You do not need to do less of everything, just gently scale back the things firing stress at the wrong time:
- Match intensity to your reserves. On a tired, stressed, under slept day, swap the punishing HIIT for a walk, easy strength, or zone 2 movement. You will lose nothing and protect a lot.
- Front load your day calmly. Morning light, 30g of protein, and gentle movement before the day kicks off, help to steady cortisol better than a frantic start.
- Set a caffeine cut off in the early afternoon.
- Eat enough. Chronic under eating reads as stress to your body and keeps cortisol up.
- Build a wind down. Dimmer lights and less screen in the last hour tells your body the day is done.
This is not about doing more. Often it is about doing the right thing at the right time, and letting your nervous system come off high alert.
Track honestly Weighing yourself, the right way
Your weight is not one fixed number, it swings every single day. A litre of water weighs a kilo. Glycogen, the carbohydrate your muscles store for energy, holds roughly 3 grams of water for every gram, so a few carb heavy meals can park 1 to 2 kg of water on the scale overnight. Add a salty dinner, a hard workout (your muscles hold water while they repair), a poor night of sleep, a glass of wine, where you are in your cycle or your menopausal hormone shifts, and even the food and waste still moving through you, and a daily swing of 1 to 2 kg is completely normal and has nothing to do with fat.
It is not humanly possible to gain 4 kg of fat in 3 days.
To store just 1 kg of body fat, your body needs roughly an extra 7,700 calories beyond what you burn. Four kilos in three days would mean eating over 30,000 surplus calories in that time. It cannot be done. That jump on the scale is water and food weight, not fat, every single time.
And the research backs the habit itself. Studies consistently find that women who weigh in daily lose more and keep it off better than those who rarely weigh, because they spot trends early and adjust gently instead of lurching from panic to giving up. One weigh in tells you almost nothing. A month of them tells you the truth.
- First thing every day, before anything else passes your lips.
- After the bathroom, so an empty bladder and bowels are not skewing the number.
- Ideally naked, or in the same minimal clothing each time.
- Same scale, same spot on a hard floor, and keep it up for at least a month so you can see how your own cycle moves the number.
- Write it down. Next to each number, jot anything that might explain a swing: a heavy weights session, a big or salty meal, alcohol, poor sleep, travel, or where you are in your cycle.
- Now you have real data to look back on. Instead of assuming you have failed after one bad number and throwing in the towel, you can see exactly what your fluctuations actually mean.
- You also get an average, and the average is the real story. Without it, you might be the unlucky one who weighs in on a low day, then again a week later as a natural high rolls in, and convinces herself she gained 4 kg in days. You did not. Watch the weekly average, never the daily dot.
- Track the trend, not the dot. Look at your average across the week. That line is your real progress, the daily numbers are just noise around it.
- Expect the climbs. The scale will rise around your period, after salt, after a tough workout, and through stressful weeks. These are predictable, not failures.
- The scale is only one data point. Photos, how your clothes fit, your waist measurement, your strength and your energy often tell a better story, especially early on while you are gaining muscle and losing fat.
- It is a tool, not a verdict on your worth. If daily weighing ever steals your peace, or you have a history of disordered eating, step back to weekly weigh ins or measurements instead. The data should serve you, never shame you.
The honest timeline What real, lasting change looks like
- Weeks 1 to 2: The scale may go up slightly. This is water drawn into your muscle by creatine, not fat. It is a good sign. Energy and cravings often start to shift.
- Weeks 3 to 6: Strength and recovery improve. Clothes may fit differently before the scale moves much, because you are gaining a little muscle while losing fat.
- Months 2 to 3: A steady, gentle downward trend begins, often around a quarter to half a kilo a week on average, with normal ups and downs.
- Months 4 to 12: This is where it compounds. The women who keep going are the ones who quietly transform, not in a month, but across a year. Slow, then suddenly.
I need to say this clearly, because the diet industry has been lying to you your whole life.
Rapid weight loss feels like winning. It is not. When you lose weight fast, a huge chunk of what leaves is muscle and water, not fat. In midlife that is the worst possible trade, because muscle is the very tissue protecting your metabolism, your blood sugar, your bones, and your strength. You burn the house down to feel lighter for a fortnight.
Then your body, which loves you and is trying to keep you alive, fights back. It slows your metabolism, cranks up hunger, and lowers the signal that says you are full. That is why the weight comes back, and usually brings friends. It was never your willpower. It was biology doing exactly what it was built to do.
You have already done the crash diets. You have already starved, and shrunk, and rebounded, and blamed yourself.
You did not fail those diets. Those diets failed your physiology.
So here we do it differently. We lose fat slowly enough that you keep your muscle. We build a body that holds its results because it is strong, not because it is starved. The goal is not to be lighter by next month. The goal is to be leaner, steadier, and stronger this time next year, and to never have to claw it all back again.
Slow is not the compromise. Slow is the whole strategy. Slow is the loss that finally stays.

Built for peri and menopause Calorie & macro calculator
The pattern matters as much as the numbers. We front load the day with protein and fibre, let portions ease down as the hours pass, and finish with a light, early, low carb dinner. Why:
- Protein and fibre first keep you full, steady your blood sugar, and protect the muscle that keeps your metabolism working.
- Bigger earlier, lighter later works with your body clock. Your body handles glucose better earlier in the day than late at night.
- A light dinner around 5:30, low in carbs, means a smaller blood sugar rise before bed, which supports deeper, more restful sleep and steadier hormones overnight.

The bit that gets you down Let's talk about your belly
For so many women, the lower belly is the part that gets them down the most. It stays soft and pooches out no matter how carefully you eat or how much weight you lose, and it can quietly chip away at how you feel in everything you put on. If that is you, you are not doing it wrong. Let's talk about what is actually going on, and what actually helps.
Here is the part most people miss: that low belly is often not just fat. As oestrogen drops, the deep core muscle that wraps around your middle like a corset can stop firing properly. When it switches off, everything it used to hold in gets pushed forward and down. That is why you can lose weight and the belly still sits there. It is a pressure and structure thing as much as a fat thing.
And this is exactly why crunches make it worse, not better. Sit-ups and crunches bear down and push your belly wall outward, on a core that is already struggling to hold things in. You end up training the belly to bulge, not to flatten. What you need is the opposite, quiet work that draws everything back in.
Try deep core work (daily, 5 minutes)
This is how you switch that corset muscle back on. Five slow minutes a day.
- Lie on your back, knees bent, feet flat. Fingers just inside your hip bones.
- Breathe in wide into your ribs, not your belly.
- Breathe out slowly with a "ssssss" and draw your lower belly in toward your spine, like you are zipping up a tight pair of jeans. Gently lift your pelvic floor at the same time (the stop-a-wee muscles).
- Hold 5 to 10 seconds, keep breathing, then release.
- Ten of those. Every day.
It can take a week or two before you feel it click. That is completely normal. Keep going.
Then add these, 3 times a week
Tap any exercise name to watch a quick how-to video.
| Movement | Start with | Tips |
|---|---|---|
| Dead bug ▶ (on your back, arms up, knees at 90, lower opposite arm and leg slowly) | 8 each side | Lower back stays glued to the floor |
| Glute bridge ▶ (feet flat, drive through your heels, lift your hips, squeeze at the top) | 12 reps | Squeeze, do not just lift |
| Bird dog ▶ (on all fours, extend opposite arm and leg, hold, control it back) | 8 each side | Slow and controlled, no wobble |
| Forearm plank ▶ (belly drawn in, bum not in the air) | 20 to 30 seconds | Build it up over time |
Slow and controlled beats fast and sloppy every single time. No floor-thrashing ab burners needed, those are the crunch problem all over again.
Walking is your secret weapon
Do not underestimate this one. A brisk walk, 30 to 40 minutes on most days, burns through blood sugar and keeps cortisol down, and high stress is exactly what makes belly fat cling. It is also the one thing that stays doable when you are tired and stretched thin. Level it up down the track with a weighted vest or a hill.
And the snacks
That 3pm sugar hunt usually is not willpower failing you, it is broken sleep quietly wrecking your hunger hormones. Sort your sleep first, get 30g of protein in at breakfast, and that afternoon pull tends to quiet right down on its own. If your eating is already fairly good, this is often the missing piece rather than a whole overhaul.
And when a craving hits while you are still working on the sleep, have a big glass of water and go for a 10 minute walk first. If you still want it when you get back, have it. Most of the time, you will not.

You do not need to train every day. You need to move consistently, recover well and fuel that movement. EssentialAF contains creatine and L-Carnitine, tools to perform and recover that most women never give themselves.
No equipment? Start here (at home, 3 days a week)
Equipment free, 20 to 30 minutes, on non consecutive days (for example Monday, Wednesday, Friday). Do each move for the reps shown, then repeat the circuit twice to start, building to three rounds.
| Movement | Start with | Works |
|---|---|---|
| Sit to stand from a chair (squat) | 10 reps | Legs, glutes |
| Incline push up (hands on bench or wall) | 8 reps | Chest, arms, core |
| Glute bridge (lying, lift hips) | 12 reps | Glutes, back |
| Split squat or step up (each leg) | 8 each side | Legs, balance |
| Bird dog (opposite arm and leg) | 8 each side | Core, stability |
| Standing calf raise | 15 reps | Lower legs, balance |
| Wall sit or plank hold | 20 to 30 seconds | Whole body |
To progress: weeks 1 to 2 focus on form, weeks 3 to 4 add reps, week 5 onward add the third round, slow each rep down, then progress to harder versions. Finish with a 10 minute walk where you can.

EAF has toured the world Travelling with EssentialAF
Short answer: yes, you can absolutely travel with EssentialAF, and we have. It has been on tour with us all around the world. It is a food based nutritional powder with a full, declared ingredients list printed right on the pouch, which is exactly what makes it straightforward to fly with. Here are the honest, practical details.
Can I take EssentialAF on a plane?
Yes. It is a clearly labelled food supplement, not a restricted item. The single most useful thing you can do is keep it in its original pouch. The printed ingredients list means security can see exactly what it is, which keeps screening quick and avoids any "what is this unmarked powder" questions.
Carry on or checked luggage?
Either works. Be aware of the powder screening rule used in many airports: powders over roughly 350ml or 12oz in your carry on may be pulled aside for an extra check at the security point. A pouch under that size usually breezes through. If you are carrying a larger amount, or simply want zero fuss, pack it in your checked bag, where there are no powder quantity limits.
Do I need to declare it at customs?
Often, yes, and declaring is free and easy. Many countries, Australia and New Zealand especially, ask you to declare all food and supplements on arrival for biosecurity. When the form asks about food, powders or supplements, tick yes. Declaring something that turns out to be fine costs you nothing. Not declaring can mean a fine. When in doubt, declare.
Is it a problem at borders that restrict dairy?
EssentialAF is dairy free, which keeps things simple at the borders that limit dairy imports. The full ingredient list printed on the pouch makes it easy to show exactly what is inside.
Smart packing tips
- Keep it in the original labelled pouch wherever possible.
- For a short trip, take only what you need. A few serves in a smaller labelled container saves space, just keep the original packaging photo or label handy.
- Pop a shaker or a zip bag in your luggage so you are ready wherever you land.
- Seal the pouch well and keep it upright. Cabin pressure can make a loose pouch puff up.
Rules vary by country and change from time to time. This is general guidance, not official customs advice. For anything specific, check your airline and the customs or biosecurity website for your destination before you fly.
