Supplements & Your Goals

Why do I need a supplement if I eat well?

Because eating well and covering everything your body now needs stopped being the same thing the moment your hormones started shifting. EssentialAF is not here to replace good food. It is here to close the gap between the diet you think you are eating and the one your changing physiology actually demands. Twelve things in one pouch, protein, creatine, collagen, magnesium, zinc, vitamin D3, probiotics and more, all dosed properly, so you are not rattling through ten separate tubs hoping you got it right.

Why do supplements matter MORE in perimenopause and beyond?

This is the part nobody warned you about. As oestrogen declines, three things happen at once: your nutrient needs go up, your absorption goes down, and your body gets less forgiving of the gaps.

  • Your protein requirement rises right when your appetite and digestion often shrink, so the old “I eat plenty of protein” quietly stops being true.
  • Stress physically drains your minerals. Here is the loop most women are stuck in: stress raises cortisol, and cortisol tells your kidneys to flush magnesium out in your urine. Lower magnesium then makes you more reactive to stress, which flushes even more. Midlife is stressful by design, so magnesium, the mineral that runs your sleep, calm, cravings and muscle recovery, is constantly being bled out exactly when you need it most.
  • The first nutrients to disappear when meals get smaller or busier, magnesium, zinc and vitamin D, are the exact ones running your sleep, energy, mood and immunity.

So this is not optional wellness. In peri and beyond, topping up the right nutrients daily is how you stop running on empty, and EssentialAF is built around precisely those gaps.

Why do supplements matter MORE when I am in a calorie deficit?

Most people get this backwards. When you eat less food, you eat fewer nutrients too, but your body’s need for them does not shrink. It rises, because you are now asking it to lose fat while protecting muscle, mood and energy on a smaller budget.

  • Protein gets harder to hit and matters more. Fall short in a deficit and your body strips muscle, not just fat. EssentialAF gives you 30g of complete protein (all 9 essential amino acids, including the leucine that flips on muscle repair) for around 180 calories.
  • Micronutrients quietly drop out. Smaller meals mean less magnesium, zinc and vitamin D, and that is when the deficit starts to feel miserable and people quit.
  • Muscle is the goal, not the casualty. Creatine (a full 3g daily dose) plus enough protein tells your body to hold onto lean tissue while fat comes off. That is how you end up leaner and stronger, not smaller and softer.

A deficit is when your margin for error vanishes. EssentialAF is calorie-efficient nutrition insurance: a lot of what your body needs, for very few of the calories you are trying to save.

Why We Are Against Meal Replacements

Is EssentialAF a meal replacement?

No, and we will be blunt: we are genuinely against the whole meal-replacement model. EssentialAF is a daily supplement designed to sit alongside real food, never instead of it.

Why are you so strongly against meal replacements?

Because of what happens to your hunger hormones, and because you were built to chew.

When you drink your calories instead of eating them, your body barely registers that a meal happened. Chewing is the first signal in the chain, it kicks off the “I am eating now” message to your brain and gut before a single nutrient is even absorbed. A real meal then stretches your stomach and releases your fullness hormones, the ones like CCK and GLP-1 that say “you are satisfied, you can stop”. A thin shake skips almost all of that. It empties out of your stomach fast, leaves your hunger hormone ghrelin barely touched, and an hour later you are starving and reaching for whatever is closest.

So meal replacements do not beat hunger, they delay and amplify it. You end up eating more later and feeling like you have no willpower, when really you just fought your own biology and lost. And in midlife, when declining oestrogen is already nudging your appetite and fullness signals out of their old rhythm, the last thing you want to do is pour a liquid diet on top.

Isn’t an extreme plan faster?

We hate extreme anything. Extreme diets, extreme training, extreme deficits, surviving on shakes, all of it reads to your body as one thing: threat. And threat means more cortisol, the exact hormone that flushes your magnesium and worsens the belly fat, broken sleep and cravings you are trying to fix. You are already carrying enough physiological stress at this stage of life. We are not going to hand you a regime that adds more. EssentialAF is the opposite of a crash plan. Eat your meals, add your daily serve, be consistent rather than extreme. That is the whole method.

So how do I actually use it?

With or between meals, once a day. It is the layer on top of real food, the protein top-up, the creatine, the magnesium and zinc and probiotics, not the thing you have instead of lunch. Make a satisfying shake, pair it with something real, and let it do its job alongside your plate.

Knowing Your Calories & Macros

How do I work out my own calories and macros?

We built you a calculator for exactly this, and it is made for peri and menopause, not generic gym maths. Put in your age, height, weight, menopause stage, activity level and goal, and it gives you a personalised calorie target, your protein and macro split, and an example day showing how to spread it out.

Use the Calorie & Macro Calculator

How does EssentialAF fit into those numbers?

Easily. A daily serve is roughly 180 calories and 30g of protein, so it slots straight into your target and usually covers a big chunk of your protein goal in one hit, the macro most midlife women fall short on. Run your numbers, then build the rest of your day around real food.

Is the calculator medical advice?

No. It gives solid general estimates to point you in the right direction, not personalised nutrition or medical advice. If you have a health condition or you are unsure, check with your GP or dietitian.

Whole Food vs Supplements

Isn’t whole food always better than a powder?

Food first. Always. We will never tell you a powder beats a plate of real food. Whole foods bring fibre, phytonutrients, satiety and that all-important act of chewing, and nothing replaces that. If that is the question, eat the broccoli.

But that is not the real question. The real question is whether perfect whole-food eating, every nutrient, in the right dose, every single day, in a calorie deficit, through perimenopause, with less appetite and lower absorption, is something any actual human pulls off. It is not. That is the gap.

EssentialAF is not competing with vegetables. It is a targeted top-up of the nutrients that are genuinely hard to get in adequate, consistent daily doses: 30g of complete protein, a clinical 3g of creatine, magnesium, zinc, vitamin D3 and live probiotics. To match one daily serve from food alone you would need several specific whole foods, plus a handful of separate supplement tubs, plus the discipline to nail all of it every day. EssentialAF is the realistic version of that.

It is “and”, not “or”. Eat the food. Add the formula for the gaps food and real life leave behind.

What’s In It (And What’s Not)

Twelve things in one pouch, isn’t everything underdosed?

Fair question, and with a lot of all-in-one powders, yes, they sprinkle in fairy dust so they can name an ingredient without delivering a real dose. EssentialAF is dosed to actually work: 30g protein, 3g creatine (the studied daily amount), 5g collagen, a 5 billion CFU probiotic, magnesium, zinc at 100% RDI, vitamin D3 and more. We publish the full panel so you can check the numbers yourself.

Why two sweeteners, and why not stevia?

EssentialAF has no added sugar and no artificial sweeteners. We sweeten it with two natural ingredients: monk fruit extract and thaumatin.

Thaumatin is a clever one. It is a natural sweetening protein from the katemfe fruit of the West African rainforest, and because it is a protein your body simply treats it like any other protein. It is around 2,000 times sweeter than sugar, so the tiny amount needed adds negligible calories, does not spike your blood sugar, and early research even suggests it may be gentle on the gut. Paired with monk fruit, it gives a clean, rounded sweetness with no harsh finish.

We deliberately did not use stevia. Stevia carries that well-known bitter, metallic, licorice aftertaste, and when you are drinking something every single day, taste fatigue is real, the aftertaste you tolerate once becomes the reason you quit by week three. There are also lingering question marks about stevia and gut bacteria, and midlife digestion is already more sensitive than it used to be. Monk fruit and thaumatin sweeten cleanly, hold up to daily use, and keep your gut out of the experiment. Both are natural. Neither is artificial. No sucralose, no aspartame, no sugar.

Is it safe to take every day?

Yes. It is formulated as a daily formula at sensible, food-level doses, not megadosed. Protein, creatine, magnesium, zinc and a spore-forming probiotic are all well studied for daily use. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, on medication or managing a health condition, show the panel to your GP first.

How do I know it is clean and properly tested?

EssentialAF is made in Australia to local standards with quality-tested ingredients, and every single batch is third-party tested to confirm it is gluten free. Heavy metals and contamination are a legitimate worry with cheap greens and plant powders, so if you ever want batch-specific detail, our team will give you a straight answer.

Does it contain dairy? Is there a dairy-free option?

Right now you can choose either: the whey isolate version contains milk, and the faba bean version is completely dairy-free with no major allergens. Both come in Piña Colada and Berry Bliss, and both are gluten free.

Heads up: once our current dairy (whey) stock sells through, we are transitioning EssentialAF to a full dairy-free offering, so the faba bean protein becomes the standard for everyone.
Can I take it with HRT or my other medications?

EssentialAF is food-grade nutrition, not a drug, and most women take it happily alongside HRT. But we will not guess about your specific prescriptions, that is a two-minute conversation with your prescriber. Show them the ingredient panel.

Will the protein or creatine make me gain weight or bulk up?

No. Protein does not cause weight gain, a calorie surplus does, and protein is the macro most likely to help you lose fat while keeping muscle. Creatine is not a steroid and will not build bulk on its own. You might see a small bump on the scale in the first week or two from a little extra water held in the muscle. That is creatine working, it is not fat, and it settles.

When is the best time to take it?

Whenever you will actually remember, consistency beats timing. Many women have it at breakfast or after movement. Take it daily and give it a few weeks, the probiotics, creatine and micronutrients build up with regular use.
